Would You, Could You?

Cut up your Mexican Otomi coverlet for lampshades or upholstery purposes a la Anna Spiro?

Since Avery's room has taken over what was our only guest bedroom, my Otomi has found a place of honor at the top of a closet, which makes me sad.
I'd love to do something with it, to be able to enjoy it on a daily basis, but don't know if I can commit to cutting it. The upholstery idea seems swell, but these things snag at the slightest tug, so I don't know how long it would survive in a two-child household.
Thoughts?

Do you have a large wall where it could be hung? My mother-in-law used a beautiful hand stitched quilt in a modern design as a wall hanging in their vacation home and it was my favorite thing in the entire home. It added so much color and interest to the space.

Ugh, I feel your pain! They are really beautiful, but not the most durable. I'm partial to using it for lampshade idea or some place that it doesn't get sat on where it will eventually look tattered. You could always hang it, but then it looks sort of college tapestry......maybe trimmed out, large scale? I'm also considering just the right place for mine in our home. I love it but I want it to look unique and high end - not like something I picked up at a Mexican tourist market (even though I did!). Good luck, I can't wait to see what you come up with.

I adore it as a lampshade. Or used as a skirted table cloth for a console or some area that isn't used often.
I have a silk scarf that is framed and most people think its a painting/print at first. It's not as large as the coverlet though...

dont cut it, please, Avery will grow and probably love it to bits!

I could only cut it if it were damaged. I feel the same about suzanis. There would have to be a large hole or stain before I would wield scissors.

P.S. Very envious of your gorgeous piece. ;)

Do the lamps! Or a big drum shade pendant light!

Is it large enough that you can use it as a coverlet for her bed or yours? How about a set of curtains? The beauty of curtains is that both the cuts and seams are straight - therefore not as painful...

my rule of thumb is if the piece would get more use/enjoyment as something new as opposed to sitting in a closet gathering dust then why wouldn't you do it?

but...the easier solution would be to find some otomi scraps and use those..
or bring your blanket out and put it somewhere it won't get ruined or pooped on?

I too couldn't bear cutting it if it were in good condition. I quite fancy the idea of using it to cover a entry table in hopes of being able to use as is without the scissors. It is so lovely, I can understand you affections for it.

Wishing you and yours a good evening!!

I mean you could go all college-like and hang it like a tapestry. I wouldn't cut it. That feels sads to me. One day you will want it in all of its full glory and its little tatters will haunt you from your craft box.
But thats just me.

I think I would be nervous it would ruin, yikes. I'll just take it for awhile until you have a place again ;)
